The wildland fire system and challenges for engineering

چکیده
Recent wildland fire disasters have attracted interest from a variety of disciplines seeking to reduce impacts on people and natural resources. Architecture, insurance reinsurance, city county government, engineering sectors contributed ideas mitigate or avoid damage during fires. This paper examines the modern system in terms historical context for fire, primarily US, discusses some characteristics this its human culture that affect potential impact innovations technologies.

Acknowledgments Firstly, I want to thank to my colleagues from DACSO. The help given by them always has been very useful. Thanks to Baker and Mónica for her participation in the experiments, and to Xiao for saving me when I was in a tight spot (talking in scientic terms). I also would like to thank to Ana Cortés and Tomàs Margalef for their corrections and guidance. Thank to Emilio Luque for hi...

The University of California's Department of Forestry and Resource Management, under contract with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, has developed and released the first version of the California Fire Economics Simulator (CFES). The current release is adapted from the Initial Action Assessment component of the USFS's National Fire Management Analysis System and features...
متن کاملScientific and social challenges for the management of fire-prone wildland--urban interfaces
At their worst, fires at the rural–urban or wildland–urban interface cause tragic loss of human lives and homes, but mitigating these fire effects through management elicits many social and scientific challenges. This paper addresses four interconnected management challenges posed by socially disastrous landscape fires. The issues concern various assets (particularly houses, human life and biod...
متن کاملSeasonal Predictions for Wildland Fire Severity
The National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS) indices deduced from the monthly to seasonal predictions of a meteorological climate model at 50-km grid space from January 1998 through December 2003 were used in conjunction with a probability model to predict the expected number of fire occurrences and large fires over the U.S. West. The short-term climate forecasts are ongoing experimental prod...
متن کاملPine Regeneration Following Wildland Fire
Pine regeneration following wildland fire continues to be a serious problem across the western and southeastern U.S. Frequency of large wildfires has increased over the last several decades and restoration of these burned areas is a major problem confronting land managers. Prescribed fires are used primarily to reduce heavy fuel loads and secondarily to reduce competition or prepare sites for n...
